Registration as a Graduate Psychiatric Nurse:
- Section 9(1) of the regulation under the Registered Psychiatric Nurses Act says “an applicant for registration as a graduate psychiatric nurse may have his or her name entered onto the register of graduate psychiatric nurses if he or she:”
- Meets all of the requirements for registration as a psychiatric nurse in section 5, except for passing the examination, and has applied to write and is waiting to write the examination or has written the examination and is awaiting the results.”
- Candidates must have applied to write the exam at the first available sitting in order to be eligible for the Graduate register. The exam must be written within one year of completing the program.
- Candidates must be registered as a Graduate Psychiatric Nurse in order to accept employment as a Graduate Psychiatric Nurse. The term Graduate Psychiatric Nurse or any abbreviation of that title is a protected title in the Act. Graduate registration is valid for a period of not more than four months, but on application may be renewed.
- Graduate psychiatric nurses do have some restrictions on their practice. While on the Graduate register you:
- May not be in charge and may not practice without supervision
- Must have a RPN or RN available to you for consultation if required
- Are expected to practice within the CRPNM Standards of Psychiatric Nursing Practice, the Psychiatric Nursing Competencies and the Code of Ethics.
To Apply for Registration as a Graduate Psychiatric Nurse:
- Contact the CRPNM for the “Application for Registration” form. Along with the application the following will be required:
- Proof of identity
- A criminal records and child abuse registry check that is current within 6 months. Criminal records check must include a vulnerable sector search.
- Confirmation of successful program completion. This will be provided on a form that is sent to the CRPNM by the university.
- The registration fee. The CRPNM by-laws have provisions that pro-rate registration fees based on a formula that divides the year into quarters.
- The application to the Graduate register will not be processed until the CRPNM receives all the required documentation and the fee.
Registration after the Exam:
- Registration must take place within four years
